What exactly is a ‘lifestyle session’?
A newborn lifestyle session is a type of photography session that focuses on capturing natural and candid moments of a newborn and their family bonding during those first few weeks. Unlike posed sessions that take place in a studio with props and backdrops, lifestyle sessions take advantage of the authentic, intimate surroundings of the baby’s home. Ultimately, the goal is to create a timeless collection of images that families can cherish as a beautiful memory of their newborn’s early days.
How to prepare
Prep your space: Your home does not have to be perfect. I promise. It’s your home and it’s supposed to look lived-in, and if you have little ones, VERY well lived-in. You don’t have to hire a professional cleaning company before your session or redecorate the living room; I’m there to focus on you and the interactions with your new baby. Instead, if you have the energy, just tidy the main living spaces and stick any obvious eyesores in the closet! A good rule of thumb is if you don’t want it in the photos (water bottles by the beds, for example), feel free to put it away. Another helpful tip is to give windows or mirrors a quick wipe down - it goes a long way as streaks or dust on these surfaces can be very obvious in photographs.
Fill that tummy! Feed your baby just before the session starts so we have a happy + sleepy baby.
Crank the heat (or turn off the air conditioning if it’s summer). The adults may feel a bit warm, but the baby will be toasty and happy!
Pull out any items you want incorporated into the session beforehand, such as special outfits, blankets or stuffed animals.
What to wear
Keep in mind that I'm documenting a day in your life, so keep it real by wearing what you’re most comfortable in and by being yourself. I encourage neutral colours, steering away from t-shirts with logos or bold patterns. Casual clothing is perfect and bare feet look most natural in a home setting. Moms, consider a light flowy shirty, maxi dress or a pretty cotton gown that will be both comfortable and soft while you are cuddling with your new baby. Whites, creams, grey, and subdued colors photograph the best. For baby, I recommend a neutral-colored onesie, something like this: https://bit.ly/3UDbkUK or https://bit.ly/3YPx02F
Small Details: If your wedding ring fits, please have it on as it adds a really nice detail to photos. Also, please either remove nail polish or have a fresh coat on!
Most importantlY
Relax! If the baby is fussy or not in the mood for photos, don’t worry. I am not in a rush and we can take our time. These sessions are fun!
